Lunarbase is pleased to present Teresa Scarpulla's second solo show at Lunarbase, "Azul, Bleu, e Blu...", March 18 through April 4, 2005. Opening reception for the artist is scheduled for Friday, March 18, 6-8pm.
This show challenges the modern art world where the classification of different movements, "surrealism", "conceptual", etc. seems to be more important than the subject matter.
The visual vocabularies utilized in this series of paintings are from the TV culture generation. Teresa Scarpulla examines "Communications" in today's multicultural environment, which are becoming increasingly more complex along with the development of information technology. In this attempt, the artist takes a highly academic approach, going back to the roots of human communication in ancient civilizations.
The result is multiple layered wood panels with sensual surfaces. One layer of the panels contains abstracted body parts, such as a TV shaped head, an arm extended like a vacuum cleaner, a flat hand, square eyes, speaker ears, spoon lips, and a mouth detached from a face traveling on its own. Other layers are filled with repetitive hieroglyphs or written languages, from Spanish, French, and English to Chinese. The panels then become fused to convey a subliminal, transcendent message beyond the language barrier. |
