Chaval

"Chaval's two main, post chemical war mutants are Pipu, a miraculous mutant butterfly, and Pepo a happy-go-lucky subservient walking pet. these two creattures play out numerous, vaporous fantasies that take the viewer through every emotion from love to lamentation; to peril and peace. Chaval's objects, which run the gamut from punching bags to shaped canvases, are true and focused, and maintain a certain David Lynch-like feel".

Born in 1975 in Buenos Aires, Chaval completed his formal art study at Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes. In his early artist career, Chaval drew comics with an apocalyptic sense of humor while studying fine art paintings. In the late 90s, in search of a new media of artistic creation, he started experimenting to paint on vinyl surfaces of cushions and punching bags, which has become an important body of his work. Since moved to New York in 1999, he has developed a series of work embodying his original characters, Pipu the mutant butterfly, Pepo the mutant walking pet, and Chaval the fish. In April 2003, his works were selected for an international juried exhibition, the "Characterism" show held at WAH Center, and received Artist Achievement Award given by Charlotta Kotik, Curator and Chair of Department of Contemporary art of the Brooklyn Museum of Art. Chaval was also one of the five Mirai Award winners which was given by Lunarbase, Inc. and Sozo Shoten Ltd. (Tokyo, Japan) for artists creating the art of the future.
Mirai is the word for Future in Japanese.
